Plywood Weight Formula
The formula for calculating plywood weight is:
Weight (lbs) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (ft) × Density (pcf)
Where:
- Length is measured in feet or meters
- Width is measured in feet or meters
- Thickness is measured in inches or millimeters
- Density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³)
Calculating the weight of a maple plywood sheet measuring 8 feet × 4 feet × 0.75 inches, with a density of 35 pcf: Weight = 8 × 4 × (0.75/12) × 35 = 70 pounds
How to Calculate Plywood Weight
- First, measure the sheet’s dimensions accurately, ensuring consistent units of measurement.
- Identify the specific density of your plywood type. Different wood species have varying densities
- Convert thickness to the appropriate unit fraction.
- Apply the weight formula,
Finding weight for a sheet of oak plywood:
- Dimensions: 96″ × 48″ × 0.5″ (8′ × 4′ × 0.5″)
- Density: 38 pcf Weight = 8 × 4 × (0.5/12) × 38 = 50.67 pounds
