A curtain size calculator is a practical tool used in interior design to measure the appropriate dimensions for curtains based on window and desired aesthetics.

A window that's 60 inches wide and 72 inches tall, and you want floor-length curtains with a 6-inch rod overhang on each side, the calculator would tell you that you need curtains with a width of at least 144 inches (to achieve a fullness of 2x) and a length of about 84 inches (assuming an 8-inch rod height above the window).

Curtain Size Measuring Formula

The basic formula for curtain width is:

Curtain Width = (Window Width + 2 Rod Overhang) Fullness Factor

A window that’s 80 inches wide, want a 6-inch rod overhang on each side, and desire a fullness factor of 2x, the calculation would be:

Curtain Width = (80 + 2 6) 2 = 184 inches

This means you’d need curtains with a total width of 184 inches to achieve the desired fullness and coverage.

How to find curtain size?

To find the correct curtain size:

Measure your window width and height

Decide on rod placement (usually 4-6 inches above the window)

Determine desired rod overhang (typically 3-6 inches on each side)

Choose curtain fullness (1.5-3x for gathered look)

Decide on curtain length (sill, below sill, or floor-length)

Let’s walk through an example:

  • Window: 70 inches wide, 60 inches tall
  • Rod placement: 4 inches above window
  • Rod overhang: 5 inches on each side
  • Desired fullness: 2x
  • Floor-length curtains (floor to rod height is 88 inches)

Calculations:

  • Rod length = 70 + (2 5) = *80 inches
  • Curtain width = 80 2 = *160 inches
  • Curtain length = 88 – 0.5 = 87.5 inches

You’d need curtains with a width of 160 inches and a length of 87.5 inches.
