How to figure out your swimsuit size?
The process of determining your swimsuit size may vary slightly depending on the brand and style, but here’s a general guide:
- Bust measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your bust while wearing a non-padded bra.
- Waist measurement: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, typically just above the belly button.
- Hip measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks.
- Torso measurement (for one-piece suits): Measure from the center of one shoulder, through the legs, and back up to the starting point.
Let’s say your measurements are:
- Bust: 36 inches
- Waist: 28 inches
- Hips: 38 inches
- Torso: 60 inches
Compare these measurements to the brand’s size chart.
If the chart shows:
Size Medium:
- Bust: 35-37 inches
- Waist: 27-29 inches
- Hips: 37-39 inches
Your measurements would likely fit a Medium in this brand.
- Style preferences: You might size up for a looser fit or down for a snugger fit.
- Body shape: If your measurements fall across different sizes, choose based on the most important area for that particular style.
- Brand variations: Sizes can vary between brands, so always check their specific size charts.
Bathing Suit Size Calculation Formula
You can use a point system to help determining bathing suit size decision:
Assign points based on where your measurements fall in the size chart:
- 0 points if measurement is below the range
- 1 point if it’s within the range
- 2 points if it’s above the range
Sum the points for bust, waist, and hips.
Divide the total by 3 to get an average.
Round to the nearest whole number to determine your size:
- 0 = Size down
- 1 = This size
- 2 = Size up
Using the Medium size from our previous example (35-37″ bust, 27-29″ waist, 37-39″ hips):
Your measurements:
- Bust: 36″ (1 point – within range)
- Waist: 28″ (1 point – within range)
- Hips: 38″ (1 point – within range)
Calculation: (1 + 1 + 1) / 3 = 1
1 (rounded) suggests this size (Medium) is likely a good fit.
