Coffee to Water Ratio Conversion Formula

The basic formula for calculating coffee to water ratio is:

Coffee (g) = Water (ml) / Ratio

For example, if you want to make 480 ml of coffee using a 1:16 ratio:

Coffee (g) = 480 / 16 = 30 grams

To convert grams to tablespoons, use the approximation that 1 tablespoon of ground coffee ≈ 7 grams.

What is a Good Ratio of Coffee-to-Water?

The ideal coffee-to-water ratio accepted standard is the “Golden Ratio” of 1:16 to 1:18.

For example, using a 1:17 ratio, you would use 17 grams of water for every 1 gram of coffee. This translates to about 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water.

For a stronger brew, you might opt for a 1:15 ratio, using 15 grams of water for every gram of coffee. Conversely, for a milder cup, a 1:18 ratio would be appropriate.

Remember, these ratios are starting points. The beauty of coffee brewing lies in experimentation and finding what suits your taste buds best. Factors like grind size, brewing method, and bean origin also play crucial roles in the final flavor profile of your coffee.
