The formula for calculating dilution ratios is:

How to Calculate the Dilution Ratio?

To calculate a dilution ratio, first identify the starting concentration and your desired final concentration.

Let’s say you need 1 gallon of a cleaning solution at a 1:10 ratio:

  • Divide 1 gallon by 11 (1 part concentrate + 10 parts water)
  • This gives you 11.6 ounces of concentrate
  • The remaining 116.4 ounces should be water

Starting with a window cleaner using a 1:8 ratio, we begin with one cup of solution needed. The calculation shows we’ll need 1 ounce of concentrate combined with 8 ounces of water, producing 9 ounces of ready-to-use cleaning solution.

For a plant fertilizer requiring a 1:100 ratio, preparing a one-gallon mix becomes straightforward. The calculations indicate 1.28 ounces of concentrate should be mixed with 126.72 ounces of water to create the full 128 ounces (one gallon) of properly diluted fertilizer.

Consider a disinfectant with a 1:32 ratio for a two-quart batch. The proper mixture requires 2 ounces of concentrate combined with 62 ounces of water, yielding 64 ounces (two quarts) of properly diluted disinfectant solution.

What Does a 5:1 Dilution Ratio Mean?

A 5:1 dilution ratio represents the proportional relationship between water and concentrate in your mixture. When working with a 5:1 ratio, you’ll combine 5 parts water with 1 part concentrate to create your final solution.

What is Dilution Ratio 1 to 10?
