An audio file size calculator is a tool used to estimate the size of digital audio files based on various parameters such as duration, bit rate, and audio format.

This calculator is particularly useful for audio professionals, podcasters, and anyone working with digital audio files.

Let’s say you’re recording a podcast episode that’s 45 minutes long. You plan to save it as an MP3 file with a bit rate of 128 kbps (kilobits per second). Using this alculator, you can quickly find that the file size will be approximately 41.0 MB.

Audio File Size Formula

The Audio File Size Formula is based on bit rate, duration, and file size.

File Size (MB) = (Bit Rate (kbps) × Duration (seconds)) ÷ 8,192

Suppose you have a 20-minute audio file recorded at 192 kbps.

Convert duration to seconds: 20 minutes × 60 = 1,200 seconds

Apply the formula:

File Size = (192 × 1,200) ÷ 8,192 ≈ 27.34 MB

The division by 8,192 converts the result from kilobits to megabytes (1 MB = 8,192 kilobits).

How to Calculate File Size of Audio?

To calculate the file size of an audio file, follow these steps:

  1. Find the duration of the audio in seconds
  2. Identify the bit rate used for encoding (usually in kbps)
  3. Multiply the duration by the bit rate
  4. Divide the result by 8,192 to convert to megabytes

Let’s work through an example:

You have a 45-minute podcast that you want to encode at 160 kbps.

Duration in seconds: 45 minutes × 60 = 2,700 seconds

Bit rate: 160 kbps

Multiply: 2,700 × 160 = 432,000

Divide by 8,192: 432,000 ÷ 8,192 ≈ 52.73 MB

Your 45-minute podcast encoded at 160 kbps will result in an audio file of approximately 52.73 MB.
