Lunar Age Calculator
With this lunar age calculator you can accurately compute your age based on the chinese lunar calendar.
The Chinese lunar age calendar is predominantly used in East Asian cultures, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. Unlike the Western age calculation system, lunar age considers a person to be one year old at birth, acknowledging the time spent in the womb as part of one’s life journey.
For example, if a baby is born on February 15, 2024, their lunar age would already be 1 year at birth. When the Lunar New Year arrives in 2025, they would turn 2 years old, regardless of only being a few months old by Western counting.
Chinese Lunar Age Calculation Chart
Western Age | Lunar Age | Special Considerations |
---|---|---|
Newborn | 1 year | Counted as 1 at birth |
1-11 months | 1-2 years | Increases by 1 at Lunar New Year |
1 year | 2-3 years | Depends on birth timing relative to Lunar New Year |
2+ years | 3+ years | Always add 1-2 years to Western age |
Lunar Age Formula
The basic formula for calculating lunar age follows this pattern:
Lunar Age = Western Age + 1 + (Current Lunar Year - Birth Lunar Year)
For example:
- Person born: July 15, 2000
- Current date: November 22, 2024
- Calculation: Western age (24) + 1 + (2024 – 2000) = 25 lunar years
How To Calculate Chinese Lunar Age?
- Starting age: Everyone begins at age 1 at birth
- Lunar New Year increment: Age increases by 1 every Lunar New Year
- Birth timing: Position relative to Lunar New Year affects age
Consider someone born on December 20, 2023:
- At birth: 1 year old
- After Lunar New Year (February 10, 2024): 2 years old
- Their Western age would still be under 1 year
What is the Lunar Age at Conception?
In traditional East Asian medicine and family planning, lunar age at conception calculation begins from the first day of the last menstrual period and follows the lunar calendar months.
Example:
- Last menstrual period: March 15, 2024
- Calculate approximately 40 weeks (10 lunar months)
- Expected delivery: December 20, 2024
- Lunar age at conception: Considered as the beginning of life in traditional counting.
